Importing and restoring backup using another Master Server

This article is based on real time problem that I faced at one of my customer site in recent past.

Terms used

nbumaster master/media server
magnum Netbackup Client

Problem:

One of magnum’s full standard backup is scheduled on every Saturday 4pm. The retention of this backup is infinity. This data is most critical and by law we are bound to keep it for infinite time. Backups were going fine and completing successfully, real problem started when I was asked to restore.

I initiated the restore process and found I m getting out of space on mount point (where data is being restored), actual data was of 16GBand total space consumed was 25GB and nothing was restore yet.

Troubleshooting

I performed various things to troubleshoot the issue but could not succeed to resolve the issue. I even logged the case with Symantec but they also could not come to any point as the logs were not showing any errors or warnings. Then we came up with the idea to use another master server to restore this data on temporary location and then move to original location.

Resolution

Duplication – To preserve the actual media firstly we made a copy of original media, called duplication.

Importation – Then we import the media, importation of media consist of two phase, phase one must be completed for all medias required to import a backup images. For example if a backup is consist of two media then both should be imported prior to phase II.

Once we were done with importation, in the Backup and Restore window on master server File > Specify Netbackup Machine and Policy Type

Define backup and restore server – nbumaster

Define source client – Client list edited to add magnum (by default it was nbumaster)

Define destination – nbumaster

Policy type – standard (originally the backup policy type on actual master server)

After defining these we were able to see the imported backup image. Selected the files to restore and placed them to temp location. And it completed successfully.
